PSHE Lower and Upper Primary
At Park Community ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ, we want to develop healthy, resilient and adaptable young people who are ready to transition to the next phase of their development into adult life. Through the teaching PSHE at Park Community ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ we want our pupils:
- To maintain good physical health and mental well-being.
- To maintain safe and healthy relationships.
- To integrate within the wider world.
- To live independently and aspire to maintain a career.
PSHE education at Park Community ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ is a planned, developmental programme of learning which makes a significant contribution to pupils’; spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour and safety and the school’s statutory responsibility to promote pupils’ wellbeing. PSHE in Lower and Upper Primary is taught in a weekly timetabled session using the SCARF Scheme of work, which incorporates the new SRE Guidance.
At Park Community ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ we want to develop our pupils understanding of the ever changing world they live in. We hope to encourage resilience and a growth mind-set that will help them to be as adaptable as possible and to effectively manage any challenges they may face.
Throughout EYFS/Lower Primary pupils learn about themselves as developing individuals and as members of their communities, building on their own experiences and on the early learning goals for personal, social and emotional development. They learn routines and the basic rules and skills for keeping themselves healthy and safe. They have opportunities to show they can take some responsibility for themselves and their environment. They begin to learn about their own and other people's feelings and become aware of the views, needs and rights of other children and older people. As members of a class and school community, they learn social skills such as how to share, take turns, play, help others, resolve simple arguments and resist bullying.
Our Upper Primary pupils learn about themselves as growing and changing individuals with their own experiences and ideas, as members of their communities. They become more mature, independent and self-confident. They learn about the diverse wider world as well as the risks and benefits of the digital world. They develop their sense of social justice and moral responsibility and begin to understand that their own choices and behaviour can affect local, national or global issues and political and social institutions. They learn how to take part more fully in school and community activities.
As they begin to develop into young adults, they learn about changes to their bodies through puberty and how this can also have an emotional impact.
PSHE in Key Stage 3, 4 and 5
In Key Stage 3 students at Park community academy study a number of different topics that are focussed around keeping safe, developing relationships and gaining an understanding of the wider world through their own identity. The course in key stage 3 blends together aspects of PSHE with Citizenship where we embed core British values such as
- Democracy.
- The rule of law.
- Individual liberty.
- Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
In Key Stage 4 students begin their accreditation in PSHE through the WJEC examination board. At present students undertake a mixture of units that build up enough credits to acquire a certificate in PSHE. These units include;
- Developing Self
- Environmental awareness
- Healthy Living
- Environmental awareness
- Dealing with problems in daily life
- Choices and Decisions
These units are delivered at two different levels; entry 2 and entry 3. Students are entered into the most appropriate level for their ability.
Careers education at Key Stage 4 is a big focus as students in year 11 embark on their first taste of the wider world through an external work experience placement. These placements are both supported and unsupported, depending on the needs of the students. Our students very much enjoy the block placement and gain a huge amount in terms of their own development, self-esteem, confidence and social skills. The work experience program is carried on further in key stage 5 where students undertake a placement that runs one day a week for half a term. In this way students gain a different perspective than the one gained in Key Stage 4. Where possible students are also given the opportunity to embark on an extended work experience placement that lasts one day a week for the entire year.
Key Stage 5
In Key Stage 5 students engage in PSHE lessons but do not undertake a specific qualification. Students are given a very broad and age appropriate curriculum whereby they are prepared for the first steps into young adulthood. Risk taking behaviour, progression planning and sex and relationships education are all taught with a focus on independence and developing those all important life skills that our students will need once they leave.
